Q - Is there a lower or upper age limit to doing Shotokan Karate?

A - The lower age limit is about 6 years of age. There is no upper age limit.

Q - Do I have to be fit to start Shotokan?

A - The quick answer is no. However, at first you may find some of the exercises and movements a little difficult. You will know your own limitations and at first you should not push yourself too hard. Shotokan is a good way of becoming fit and after a few weeks of training you will begin to feel the benefit and be ready to increase the pace.

Q - What if I have a medical condition?

A - As with any other form of sport/exercise, if you do have a medical condition you should consult your Doctor before taking it up. You also have to declare any medical condition when you join the club.

Q - How much does it cost?

A - It is best to get up to date details from Sensei Rob Lewis. Much depends on your age, how often you train and whether you join alone or as a family.

Q - When and where does training take place?

A - Details can be found on The Clubs page.

Q - Which training session is the best for beginners?

A - Details can be found on The Clubs page.

Q - What do I have to wear?

A - As a beginner you should wear loose, lightweight clothing (joggers and 'T' shirt are ideal). After a few weeks and once you have decided to keep doing the sport, you will be expected to get a proper suit (Gi). Gi's can be obtained through the Sensei.

Q - Will I be the only beginner?

A - No. There are new members joining almost every week.

Q - Is there any recommended reading?

A - The Beginners Guide To Shotokan Karate by John van Weenen gives a very good introduction to Shotokan.

Q - Are students allowed to train at any of the clubs?

A - Yes, we also welcome visitors from outside clubs/associations.
